Vanuatu Sustainable Tourism Policy

In Vanuatu, the Department of Tourism is undertaking several initiatives in the area of responsible tourism as part of their 3-year campaign, including the National Sustainable Development Plan which incorporates economic, social and environmental issues.

From this Plan, the Sustainable Tourism Policy operates a certification program for tourism businesses and the Operations and Visitors Codes of Conduct. The Sustainable Tourism Policy will focus on destination management and their systems and provide policy support. The Certification Program involves 42 tourism businesses and requires them to update business licence schedules and put in place standards. There is a 2-year review of the certification and business survey. Businesses will be required to have a licence, there are legal requirements and the Ministry will collect data. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council is working with them and has endorsed the Ministry of Tourism’s Sustainable Tourism Policy.
