Murky Waters: A Qualitative Assessment of Modern Slavery in the Pacific Region.
Walk Free has released a report on the reality of modern slavery in the Pacific.
Research shows that vulnerability to modern slavery in the region is expected to increase, due to factors including climate-change induced displacement, labour migration into and within the region, poverty, and unemployment.
The report findings reflect both an existing body of evidence and the testimony of people on the ground, law enforcement, victim support workers, and local and international agencies.
With the launch of this report, they hope to demonstrate the need for government action to increase protection for vulnerable people in the Pacific.
Extremely exploitative practices such as forced labour, the worst forms of child labour, and forced and early marriage were all identified across the Pacific Islands, Australia, and New Zealand.
A coordinated response between governments, businesses, faiths, and civil society is critical to end modern slavery in the region.
